The following are contributing factors that can lead to atrial fibrillation (irregular heart rhythm).
Controllable
- High Blood Pressure
- Hyperthyroidism
- Excessive alcohol consumption
- Cigarette or other stimulant use (caffeine)
- Periods of extreme stress or fatigue
Uncontrollable
- Increasing Age
- Heart Disease – including valve problems, a history of heart attack or heart surgery
- Chronic lung disease
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
