Terry McGuire

Terrance G. McGuire, Co-founder and General Partner
Polaris Venture Partners

Terry McGuire is a co-founder and general partner of Polaris Venture Partners.  Terry focuses on life sciences investments.

Boards:
Terry has co-founded Inspire Pharmaceuticals, AIR (Advanced Inhalation Research, Inc.), and MicroCHIPS.

Terry represents Polaris on the boards of directors of Acceleron Pharma, Adimab, Arsenal Medical, deCODE Genetics, Ironwood Pharmaceuticals, Life Line Screening, MicroCHIPS, Pulmatrix, SustainX, and Trevena.

Terry is Chairman Emeritus of the National Venture Capital Association, which represents ninety percent of the venture capitalists in the United States.  He served as Chairman from 2009-2010.

He chairs the Board of Overseers of the Thayer School of Engineering, Dartmouth College, and serves on the boards of MIT’s David Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, and the Arthur Rock Center for Entrepreneurship, Harvard Business School. 

Education:
MBA from Harvard Business School.  MS in engineering from The Thayer School at Dartmouth College.  BS in physics and economics from Hobart College.

Awards:
Terry is a recipient of the 2009 Massachusetts Society for Medical Research Award, and the 2005 Albert Einstein Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Life Sciences, awarded by Forbes/Gottlieb Medical Technology Investor, Harvard MIT Biomedical Engineering Center, the New Jerusalem Foundation, the Jerusalem Development Authority, and Rodman and Renshaw.

Jason Trevisan

Jason Trevisan has been with Polaris Venture Partners since 2003.  He focuses on growth equity investments and buyout opportunities in Internet, technology, healthcare, and media sectors.

Prior to joining Polaris Jason held various management roles in Analytics and Client Services at aQuantive (acquired by Microsoft in 2007).  During his tenure at aQuantive Jason managed client relationships in industries including ecommerce, media/entertainment, pharmaceuticals, financial services and consumer products.  Prior to aQuantive, he was a consultant with Bain & Company.  While at Bain he consulted to private equity firms and Fortune 500 companies in technology, media, financial services and consumer products.

In addition to Life Line Screening, Jason is on the Board of Directors of Legalzoom, PartsSource, SnappCloud and ShoeDazzle.  Jason received his M.B.A. with Distinction from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, where he was recognized as an Edward Tuck Scholar.  He graduated cum laude with an A.B. in English from Duke University.

John B. Ziegler John  B. Ziegler

John B. Ziegler retired in January 2006 as the President, Worldwide Consumer Healthcare, of GlaxoSmithKline plc (the parent of SmithKline Beecham plc).

Mr. Ziegler joined SmithKline Beecham in 1991 as the head of SB Consumer Healthcare - North American Division. He was Executive Vice President of SmithKline Beecham from 1996 to 1998 and became President, Worldwide Consumer Healthcare in 1998. He has been a director of Quest Diagnostics since May 2000. Mr. Ziegler has been recommended by SmithKline Beecham for nomination as a director of Quest Diagnostics pursuant to the Stockholders Agreement with SmithKline Beecham.

He has extensive executive experience, including in sales, marketing, strategic planning and international operations, with multinational corporations operating in the health care industry.

Rakesh K. Kaul

Rakesh K. Kaul serves as Senior Advisor and Board Member of Oriental Trading Co., a $600MM direct/ecommerce marketer of Educational and Party Goods Supplies. He is a Senior Advisor and Board Member to Life Line Screening, a leading, consumer direct, preventive health screening company. He is Chairman of Spherenomics LLC which since 2001 has focused on Indo US Cross Border Business Opportunities in a principal capacity. He has served as Senior Advisor to The Carlyle Group Consumer and Retail Group from 2007 to 2010.

He served as the President and Chief Executive Officer and Member of the Board of Directors for Hanover Direct, Inc. in Weehawken, New Jersey, from March 1996 to December 2000.

Starting in 1992, Rakesh served as Executive Vice President, Chief Administrative Officer, and Member of the Board of Directors for Fingerhut Companies in Minneapolis. In 1994, Rakesh was promoted to Vice Chairman and promoted again in 1995 to Chief Operating Officer where he served until March 1996. He was the Founder of Metris Credit Card companies.

Rakesh received his undergraduate degree from the Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi, India. He received his M.S. from Brown University and was awarded his M.B.A. from the University of Chicago. He has passed the CPA exam from the State of California.

As a Global executive Rakesh has worked extensively in Japan, China, India, Canada and the US for 30 years in the areas of Consumer Products, Retailing, Ecommerce and Consumer Finance.

Peter Barton Hutt

Peter Barton Hutt
Senior Counsel, Covington & Burling LLP

Peter Barton Hutt is a senior counsel in the Washington, D.C. law firm of Covington & Burling LLP specializing in Food and Drug Law. He graduated from Yale College and Harvard Law School and obtained a Master of Laws degree in Food and Drug Law from NYU Law School. Mr. Hutt served as Chief Counsel for the Food and Drug Administration during 1971-1975.

He is the co-author of the casebook used to teach food and drug law throughout the country, and has published more than 175 book chapters and articles on food and drug law and health policy. Beginning in 1994 he has taught a full course on this subject during Winter Term at Harvard Law School, and in 1998 he taught the same course during Spring Term at Stanford Law School. Mr. Hutt has been a member of the Institute of Medicine since it was founded in 1971.

He serves on academic, philanthropy, and venture capital advisory boards, and the boards of startup biotechnology companies.
