Edward - A TIA is a Transient Ischemic Attack, which is the same as a min-stroke. It is a serious warning sign that your friend is at-risk for a full-blown stroke. He or she should consult with a primary care doctor who can refer to a vascular specialist. Most likely the doctor will order tests similar to the ones that Life Line Screening offers (carotid artery ultrasound, for example) but these tests will be diagnostic in nature, rather than a simple screening. It cannot be emphasized enough that these warning signs are serious. Your friend needs to be evaluated right away. If another one happens, get your friend to a hospital so the TIA can be witnessed by a healthcare professional, preferably one that specializes in the evaluation and treatment of stroke. Time is of the essence during a stroke and quick diagnosis and treatment is crucial.
