Elevated Liver Enzymes

Q. Why do I need this screening?

A. If you are on cholesterol-lowering medication, including statins, fibrates, bile-acid resins, absorption inhibitors or nicotinic acid/niacin, it’s recommended your liver enzyme levels be checked regularly. Statin medications work by blocking the liver enzyme that is responsible for producing cholesterol. A side effect of some statins is elevated liver enzymes, indicating liver injury.

Q. What is involved in the screening for elevated liver enzymes?

A. A few drops of blood will be taken from your finger and analyzed at the screening site.

Q. Do I have to fast before the screening?

A. No, you don’t need to fast if you are only having the liver test.

Q. Do I need this screening if I already get my blood tested by my doctor?

A. Liver enzymes are typically not included in routine blood testing. Ask your physician if he or she is specifically checking for elevated liver enzymes, or see if your laboratory report includes results for ALT and AST.

It is recommended that your liver enzymes be tested at least once a year or as frequently as your doctor advises.

Q. When will I receive my results?

A. Results are ready within 10 minutes on the day of your screening

Q. How much time will the test take?

A. The liver enzyme blood test takes 10 minutes to complete.

Q. What is the accuracy level of this test?

A. Life Line Screening uses the latest technology in blood testing, giving the same level of accuracy and precision that you would get from a clinical laboratory.
