Protect Your Photos to Preserve Them for a Lifetime
Summer is a great time to make new memories that you can capture with your camera. But just as the memories in your mind can fade over the years, your photos can become ravaged by time. (And if you keep your photos on a computer, they can vanish in the blink of an eye). Your memories are too precious to allow to disappear.
Here are some of the top tips that experts recommend for maintaining and preserving your photos:
- Keep them safe. If you have printed photos, keep them in a cool, dry place that's safe from pests and away from direct sunlight. That means not storing them in an overheated attic or a damp basement.
- Use archival-quality storage materials. Use acid-free, adhesive-free storage albums, rather than sticking your photos in cheap albums that can damage them or storing them in a cardboard box.
- Scan them. If you don't have a scanner that allows you to digitally store your photos (or a camera that takes digital shots), buy a scanner or take your photos to a scanning service, where the staff will digitally convert them for you.
- Store them in multiple places. Just as you shouldn't put all your eggs in one basket, be sure not to put all your digital photos on your computer or on a single website. Store them in multiple places, using multiple types of storage media, such as in an external hard drive and on a DVD.
- Wear protective gloves when you're handling your old photos - the oil from your fingertips can damage them.
